The following is a sample document for TOEFL independent writing.
A parent teaches his or her child about life, including how to be a good person or how to save money. But, a parent can also criticize his or her child, such as for not performing well or misbehaving. Even so, teaching and criticizing both reflect a parent’s love for his or her child.
Throughout my childhood, I remember my parents teaching me about both academic and non-academic topics. For example, my mother and I often discussed social studies and history and, doing so, deepened my appreciation for these subjects. My father and I explored scientific topics, such as osmosis and diffusion. From a non-academic perspective, my mother explained the ins and outs of American politics, while my father helped me learn how to play the piano.
In addition to teaching me, my parents also provided me with constructive criticism. For example, my dad would accompany me to my piano lessons and, afterward, grade my performance. Once, after recovering from the measles, I recall my dad giving me a “very good”—instead of my usual “excellent”—and I upset that I didn’t do well because I wasn’t able to practice while I was ill. Along the same lines, because my mother wanted me to attend law school, she criticized my choice to attend a graduate school for international studies. Because she justified her opinion by saying that I had an “analytical mind,” her critique later guided me in starting businesses that capitalized on this talent.
In sum, my parents taught me about both academic subjects and life. Each parent used their unique skills to advance my education. In doing so, they were generous and patient. When I didn’t perform up to their—or my own—expectations, they criticized me gently but firmly. But, whether they were teaching me or providing me with constructive criticism, they always demonstrated their unconditional love.
