 “Would”

Besides words and phrases, Latin also influences English grammar. The most notable example of this effect is the word “would,” which means that, under certain conditions, something happens. For example:

  • “If you travel to China, you would see many historic sites.”
  • “If you learn Chinese, you would find it easier to make Chinese friends.”

You also use “would” in certain common phrases, such as:

  • “I would like to introduce you to my friends.”
  • “Thanks for inviting me. I would be happy to join you.”
