Effective cover letter for resume-working professional example
Let’s return to the IT professional who wants to join a smaller company. Using the resume in Sample resume-professional, you can develop an effective cover letter. But, how would you do so?
Use The Fast Track Way to develop a standout cover letter:
Step 1-Analyze Your Situation: Since you’ve already spoken with the CEO, you think he has a positive perspective toward you. Your purpose in writing this letter is to confirm that your skills and experience are precisely what he’s looking for.
Step 2-State Your Main Point, Message, or Theme: In this case, refer to the event where you and this executive met to write the first paragraph’s lead-in. Next link his company’s “future” with your career goal, which is stated in the last sentence of your resume’s Overview.
Step 3-Know Your Logic Flow: Use the Work Experience section of your resume to write the second paragraph. In the third paragraph, explain briefly why you want to leave your current company and move to a midsize firm. In the last paragraph, reiterate your interest and mention how you’ll follow up.
Example of cover letter:
May 25, 20VV
Mr. John Rodgers
CEO
Rodgers Technology, Inc.
555 Ross Avenue
Dallas, Texas 75001
Dear Mr. Rodgers:
I enjoyed speaking with you at the Southwest Technology Stars Awards (STSA) dinner. STSA’s Five-Year Leadership Award evidently recognizes both your vision and ability to execute. But, while your achievements have been impressive, I’m even more excited about Rodgers Technology’s future. Therefore, I’m writing to express my interest in helping your company become the leading IT provider to middle-market firms.
As you know, I’ve worked at EDS for the past five years. Having been in both operations and client management, I’m knowledgeable about and comfortable dealing with virtually every aspect of the information technology business. For the past three years, I’ve been responsible for the Berman Company, a $50 MM EDS client. During this time, my team and I have turned around a difficult situation. As a result, this client now generates increased revenues and profits for EDS.
Because the upcoming EDS-HP merger will result in a $100 billion entity, I’m not inclined to continue my career with the new company. Instead, I’d like to parlay my skills and experience in a managerial role at a midsize IT firm that aspires to be the leader in its market. That’s why I’d welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your colleagues to discuss how I might be able to add value to your firm.
I’ll follow up with your office in about two weeks to arrange an appointment. I look forward to seeing you again.
Best regards,
Jeff Liu
