Felicia roleplays person who’s networking, and Jinglei roleplays the person she’s meeting.
Felicia: Hello, I’m Felicia Zimmerman. (shakes hands with Jinglei and hands him her card)
Jinglei: I’m glad to meet you, Felicia. I’m Jinglei Hu. (hands Felicia his card)
Felicia: It’s great that PricewaterhouseCoopers regularly puts on these luncheons. It gives us a chance to meet people we wouldn’t otherwise meet.
Jinglei: Yes, you’re right about that. What do you do?
Felicia: After 20 years as a consultant to large corporations, including PwC, I’ve started a website business that provides advanced English training to international students and young professionals, especially in China.
Jinglei: Gee, that’s interesting. Do you speak Chinese? How did you come up with this idea?
Felicia: Well, I do speak Chinese, although I’m still not fluent. When I returned to Connecticut after living for two decades in Texas, I started studying Chinese and, in turn, made many Chinese friends at United Technologies Corporation and at Yale. Through chatting with them, I came up with this idea. How about you? What’s your field?
Jinglei: I’m part of JH Equity Partners. We provide capital for projects that are beyond the angel investor or the early stage of a venture.
Felicia: That’s also very interesting. Are you focused on a particular industry or area?
Jinglei: Actually, we had been investing in upscale restaurant chains, but with the economic slowdown, we’ll need to refocus. When do you think that your venture will start to monetize?
Felicia: The Fast Track English team is now focused on optimizing our site so that it will attract a vast network of users, especially in China. We know that this is the critical first step. Once this network involves millions of individuals, this site should be quite attractive to advertisers and, over time, investors. A short-term monetary opportunity will be for me to conduct workshops in China. Over the medium- and longer-term, we hope to be able to pursue strategic alliances and, beyond that, investments.
Jinglei: It certainly sounds as if you’ve thought through where you’re going with this site.
Felicia: Thanks. I really appreciate your comment. Oh, the luncheon speaker is about to begin. In a few months, I’d like to follow up with you to share where we are and get your take on where we’re going and what else we might do.
Jinglei: I’d enjoy that. Who knows where this meeting might lead us?
