Your university’s architecture department is holding a reception for a famous architect. Even though you’re a freshman and haven’t yet declared your major, you’re very interested in architecture. How can you meet and speak with this individual?

We’ll apply the first two steps of The Fast Track Way. As you’ll see in what follows, when you attend a social event, the two steps you’ll primarily use are Steps 1 and 2. Even though you want to make a good impression on this VIP, you shouldn’t monopolize his or her time. Often, there are others who also want to meet this important person. Here’s how you can handle this social event:

Step 1-Analyze Your Situation: You’ve done your homework. You know that this architect’s modernist style is strongly influenced by the German Bauhaus school of architecture. You also know that this individual sometimes mentors architecture students and up-and-coming architects. As a result, you think he might be receptive—have a positive perspective—to speaking with you. Your purpose is to introduce yourself and, by doing so, make an important contact for your future.

Step 2-State Your Main Point, Message, or Theme: Extending your hand to shake hands with this person, you could say, “ Professor Jones, I’m Jinxi Sun. I greatly admire your work and have visited several of the office buildings you’ve designed. Like you, I am fascinated by the Bauhaus school and its enduring impact on art, design, and architecture. Even though I’m a freshman, I’m strongly interested in becoming an architect. I’d appreciate being able to contact you to seek your advice about my career path. May I write or email you? ”

At this point, especially if there are others waiting to meet him, the VIP will probably give you his card and say you can write or email him.

But, what if this individual wants to learn more about you? He might say, “Tell me a little more about yourself.” In such a case, you’d use a combined version of Steps 3 and 4 to guide you as you respond:

Step 3-Know Your Logic Flow AND Step 4-Integrate Your Information:

  • My current coursework:

    • art

    • art history

    • architecture

  • My preliminary goals:

    • Undergraduate degree in art

    • Graduate degree in architecture

    • Intern at international architecture firm

    • Work at large, midsize, or small architecture firm

  • Any suggestions he might have.
